What is a refugee?
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), “Refugees are people who have fled war, violence, conflict or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country”.
What type of housing is provided and where is it located?
Most of the housing are single family homes located is Seattle, we are looking to expand across the Seattle area.
How long do the families stay in the housing?
Families typically stay from two weeks to three months, depending on when they secure permanent housing. Smaller families (two to five members) find it easier to locate 1 or 2 bedroom apartments, while larger families may take longer to find 3 or 4 bedroom apartments, which are scarce and more expensive. The competitiveness of the rental market can also impact the duration of their stay.
Who selects the families that are placed in our housing?
We partner with nonprofits that specialize in working with populations in need of housing. We currently partner with World Relief, which is a non-profit Refugee Resettlement Agency that contracts with the U.S. government. If you are interested in learning more about World Relief, please visit UNHCR.
Where do the families come from?
In partnering with World Relief, the majority of families come from Afghanistan following the 2021 government collapse. These families continue to arrive from U.S. military bases and other countries where they sought refuge. Additionally, we have received families from Ukraine, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iraq, Somalia, Burma, South Sudan, Venezuela, Guatemala, Congo, Rwanda and Moldova. Afghan and Iraqi families often arrive with Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs), granted based on their prior work with the U.S. armed forces. Learn more about Special Immigrant Visas at World Relief.
